This analogy of the weight of a glass of water has been around a long time, and I feel it is so appropriate when we think about the weight of anxiety or stress for those people suffering with anxiety or stress. A teacher one day was holding a glass of water and she asked the class how heavy the glass of water was? She had many answers, but she stopped and replied to the class, the weight doesn’t really matter. “The teacher went on to say that it really depends on how long I hold the glass for. If I hold it for a minute, it’s okay and it’s not a problem. If I hold it for an hour, for certain I’ll feel it and I’ll arm ache. Should I hold it for a whole day, my arm will feel stiff, numb, and paralysed. She went on to tell the class that the weight of the glass doesn’t change, however the longer I hold the glass of water the heavier it becomes.”
Anxiety and stress can be likened to the glass of water the teacher demonstrated. Managing anxiety and stress for a short time is manageable. Trying to manage anxiety and stress for a longer period they will begin to feel quite uncomfortable. Should the sufferers think about anxiety and stress constantly, they will feel paralysed and helpless of doing anything or moving forward. This means that the anxiety or stress can have a very negative impact on how they think, feel, and behave, and also impact their physical and mental health negatively.
