I heard back from a client yesterday who came for his Fear of Heights, and oh my word he was bad! He couldn’t stand at the top of the stairs without going dizzy, feeling sick and then falling victim to massive headaches through his fear of heights. The worst thing was he was a service engineer for a large plane company, and of recent hadn’t been able to do his job. I knew in my heart of hearts I’d clear it in two sessions, and one was hypnotherapy and the other with EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) and NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming). So, he came along and during the intake of form completion I always drop in “don’t worry I’ll teach how to actively utilise your mind to affect our body, by thinking yourself fear free”. I just leave it there. I discovered through careful questioning that as a toddler on holiday in Devon, he’d discovered his ability to run and he ran nearly over the edge of a cliff, and his mother and father were screaming and everyone was shouting his name, screaming and crying!!! Just as he nearly went over the cliff a man grabbed him in a rugby tackle and saved his life! But this caused his fear of heights and damaged him for life, he’s 42 now!
For his fear of heights I did a little bit of EFT initially, as with EFT you don’t cut the tops off the emotional trees; you cut it away at the root. After 5 rounds of tapping I was able to get right in and started chopping away the negatives. I asked him “if his fear had a colour, what would it be?”. “If it had a shape, what shape would it be?” “If the background that is, everything that wasn’t the fear had a colour, what would that colour be?” I then went on with, if the colour of the fear was to become the same colour as the background, would it have to get lighter or darker? He tried this and all he was left with was an outline of the shape. So I asked him to make that shape smaller and smaller until it is just about to disappear. Now make it even smaller still, so that you can try to look all over the background for it, and notice it has gone. Finally “if there was a colour of healing for your fear, what colour would it be?” Now fill the background with that colour, top to bottom, right to left until it is completely full of that healing colour. He started crying because he said he didn’t feel the same way, and within that moment his fear of heights disappeared! Then on to the hypnotherapy just to seal the deal.
He came back for a second session of NLP and hypnotherapy purely as belt and braces, as he’d decided he was going abseiling to celebrate! What did surprise me was that he’d called one hypnotherapist before he’d found me who’d told him “with that sort of deep fear, you’re looking between ten and twenty hypnotherapy sessions, and he also said “you can’t rid that fear so quickly it takes time”. Well yesterday he text me to say “Annette, you’re awesome, I’ve been abseiling for the last two weeks in the lakes and I’ve totally loved it and embraced it, and I can’t thank you enough”! If you have a fear look at it the way asked my client’s to look at it and combine with hypnotherapy, it works like magic!
- Firstly give your problem a colour.
- Now give it a shape.
- If the background that is everything that isn’t the fear had a colour what colour would that be?
- If the colour of the fear was to become the same colour as the background, would it be lighter or darker?
- Increasingly make it the same colour as the background so all you are left with is an outline of the shape.
- Now make that shape smaller and smaller until it is just about to disappear.
- Make it even smaller still, so that you can try to look all over the background for it, and notice it has gone.
- “If there was a colour of healing, what would it be?”
- Now then fill the background with that colour, top to bottom, right to left until it is completely full of that healing colour, and watch the magic happen.
